The Design Process with RGI | You may be wondering—how does the design process work? We would love to share that with you! It is always our desire that you feel comfortable working with us.  Our goal is to make working with a designer fun, exciting and non-intimidating.

As the temperatures drop and the days grow shorter, many of us feel the urge to cozy up our homes and reflect the beauty of fall. Transitioning your home décor from the bright, breezy feel of summer to the warm, inviting essence of fall doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are my top tips for transitioning your home décor from summer to fall.

1. Layer in Textures for Warmth

Fall is all about creating a cozy atmosphere. One of the simplest ways to do this is by layering in textures. Swap out lightweight cotton throws and linen pillows for plush velvet, chunky knits, or faux fur. Adding layers not only provides physical warmth but also gives a sense of visual warmth that defines fall.

Pro Tip: Mix and match different textures for a dynamic look. For example, combine a faux fur blanket with a woven wool pillow for contrast and comfort.

2. Incorporate Warm Tones

While summer is dominated by cool blues and bright whites, fall calls for rich, warm tones like deep oranges, rusts, browns, and golds. These colors instantly evoke the fall season and can be introduced through pillows, throws, or even artwork.

Easy Updates: Switch out your summer art pieces for landscape prints featuring autumn colors or add some terracotta-colored pottery to your shelves.

3. Bring Nature Indoors

Fall is the perfect time to celebrate nature by incorporating elements from the outdoors. Whether it’s a vase filled with dried grasses, a bowl of pinecones, or a display of mini pumpkins, these natural touches help bring the season into your home in a subtle but impactful way.

Austinite’s Advantage: Living in Austin gives us access to plenty of local fall foliage, such as dried branches or native plants, that can be beautifully integrated into your décor. Visit a local farmer’s market or take a weekend stroll through the greenbelt for inspiration.

4. Update Your Entryway

Your entryway is the first thing guests see when they visit your home, so why not make it seasonally inviting? Consider changing out your summer wreath for one made of fall leaves, berries, or dried flowers. A fall-themed doormat or a display of pumpkins by the front door can also help set the tone for the season ahead.

Texas Charm: Add a touch of Texas flair by using succulents and rustic wooden accents in your entryway for a unique fall look.

5. Swap Lightweight Fabrics for Heavier Ones

In the summer months, we often gravitate toward lightweight fabrics like sheer curtains, cotton bedding, or linen tablecloths. As fall approaches, swap these out for heavier options like velvet drapes, flannel sheets, or a wool table runner. These small changes will help your home feel snug as the cooler weather arrives.

Tip for Austin Homes: Because our fall season is typically mild, consider layering light fabrics with heavier ones. A breathable cotton sheet paired with a wool blanket can be the perfect combination for our ever-changing fall temperatures.

6. Create a Cozy Lighting Scheme

Fall is all about ambiance, and lighting plays a huge role in creating the right mood. As natural light begins to fade earlier, adding table lamps, lanterns, and candles can give your home that warm, inviting glow. Opt for soft, golden light bulbs to create a cozy environment as the days grow darker.

Candle Love: Incorporate fall-scented candles—think cinnamon, apple, or pumpkin spice—to add an extra layer of seasonal warmth and a sensory element to your décor.

7. Change Out Your Centerpieces

Update your dining or coffee table with fall-themed centerpieces. Summer centerpieces tend to be light and airy, featuring fresh flowers and beachy elements. For fall, swap in arrangements of dried flowers, wheat stalks, or a display of gourds and candles.

Simple DIY Tip: Gather a few glass jars, fill them with acorns or cinnamon sticks, and add a small tealight inside. It’s an easy, affordable way to create a fall-themed centerpiece.

Final Thoughts

Transitioning your home décor from summer to fall is a wonderful opportunity to refresh your space and embrace the coziness of the season. Whether you’re making big changes or adding small touches, remember that the goal is to create a home that feels warm, inviting, and reflective of the beauty of fall.

As we settle into fall here in Austin, Robin Gonzales Interiors is here to help you make the most of the season by curating a décor style that brings comfort and joy into your home. Happy decorating!

Maximalism | If you love bold colors, eclectic patterns, and a touch of organized chaos, then maximalism in 2025 is your ideal style. This trend is all about embracing individuality and breaking free from traditional design rules. It celebrates vibrant colors, unexpected combinations, and a mix of old and new, creating spaces that are as distinctive and lively as the people who live in them.

It’s bold, unapologetic, and anything but dull.

For the wall decor industry, maximalism brings endless opportunities. With the rising demand for eye-catching, one-of-a-kind pieces—like bold abstract art or eclectic gallery walls—offering customizable options, such as personalized color schemes or print sizes, allows consumers to craft spaces that reflect their unique style.

When you’re an interior designer, it’s important to truly walk in the shoes of your clients when designing their ideal spaces. San Francisco-based designer Tineke Triggs shares similar feelings, “To create something that feels unique to the client, I try to get in their heads. I get very emotionally attached to my clients.”

One of Triggs’ designs that caught my eye in particular was a wet bar/dining room in a Bay Area home where she tipped her hat to the husband’s favorite beverage…beer! The whimsical butterflies you see on the wall are actually made from beer cans, a piece of art created by Paul Villinski and commissioned by Bettina Stiewe of Upstart Modern.

Love It Or Leave It: What do you think of the butterflies? Can you see them in your home?
