From dated and dark to sleek and inviting. What a transformation!
Reinvention: We all have unused spaces in our homes, but with a little creativity, we can elevate them into cool places to hang out. And we did just that for a wonderful client family! I simply love how this turned out––the Cambria surface adds a certain luxe sophistication, while the gorgeous waterfall edge exudes true timelessness.
Elevating Backyard Entertaining
Elevating Backyard Entertaining
Elevating Backyard Entertaining
A well-designed space extends beyond the four walls of a house. The backyard, often overlooked, holds immense potential for creating unforgettable moments and experiences. In recent years, there has been a shift towards outdoor entertaining, and as someone deeply passionate about design, I find it exciting to explore the possibilities of transforming outdoor spaces into havens of style and comfort. Here, I’ll share some insights and tips on how to elevate your backyard entertaining game, creating a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living.

Embrace the Elements
Just as we carefully select colors, textures, and furniture for indoor spaces, the same attention should be given to the outdoors. Start by considering the natural elements of your backyard – the landscape, sunlight, shade, and wind patterns. Work with these elements to create a harmonious outdoor environment. For instance, if your backyard receives ample sunlight, provide shaded areas with pergolas, umbrellas, or strategically planted trees.

Define Zones
Just like in interior design, defining different zones within your backyard can enhance functionality and visual appeal. Consider areas for dining, lounging, cooking, and recreation. Use furniture, rugs, planters, or even changes in elevation to delineate these zones. This not only creates visual interest but also ensures that each area serves its purpose effectively.

Choose Durable and Stylish Furnishings
When selecting outdoor furniture, prioritize durability without compromising on style. Opt for materials like teak, aluminum, or weather-resistant wicker that can withstand outdoor conditions. Cushions and textiles should be made from outdoor-grade fabrics that are fade-resistant and easy to clean. Incorporate a mix of seating options, including dining sets, lounge chairs, and ottomans, to accommodate different activities and group sizes.

Illuminate with Style
Outdoor lighting can dramatically transform the ambiance of your backyard, extending the hours of enjoyment well into the evening. Incorporate a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create layers of illumination. Consider options such as string lights, lanterns, sconces, and pathway lighting to add warmth and charm to your outdoor space.

Add Greenery and Color
Plants are not only decorative but also contribute to a sense of tranquility and connection with nature. Incorporate a variety of planters, hanging baskets, and garden beds to add greenery and color to your backyard oasis. Choose plants that thrive in your climate and require minimal maintenance. Additionally, consider seasonal flowers and foliage to add pops of color and texture throughout the year.

Personalize with Accessories
Just like in interior design, accessories can add personality and flair to your outdoor space. Incorporate rugs, throw pillows, outdoor rugs, and decorative accents to infuse your backyard with style and charm. Choose accessories that reflect your personal taste and complement the overall design aesthetic of your home.

Final Thoughts
As an interior designer, I’ve always believed that great design knows no bounds – whether indoors or outdoors. By applying the same principles of design and attention to detail, you can transform your backyard into a stylish and inviting space for entertaining, relaxation, and creating cherished memories with loved ones. Embrace the elements, define zones, choose durable furnishings, illuminate with style, add greenery and color, and personalize with accessories to elevate your backyard entertaining experience to new heights. After all, life is too short to limit ourselves to indoor spaces alone – let’s embrace the beauty and potential of the great outdoors.

Don’t be afraid of dark colors. This dark accent wall served as the perfect backdrop and made the whole space come to life.
My Featured Project: Georgetown French Country Remodel
I can’t express how happy I am with my experience in working with Robin on our new home. I was very reluctant to even see the value in hiring a designer at first, but agreed to make my wife happy. Now that we are finished I can’t even imagine doing it without her. I was concerned about looking like I lived in a model home that had no personality of my own. Instead, she brought out our personalities and allowed us to express and showcase them

We now have a house that is gorgeous, and put together in a manner that ties every room together yet it still feels like my “home”So easy to work with, and such a great person. And in the end, she may have saved us almost as much as she cost us because she passed on so much savings from her direct relationships with manufacturers and custom craftsmen. If you have the opportunity to work with Robin on any project, I suggest you jump at the chance.
