From void and unused space to a stylish and efficient wine nook!
Tucked beneath a staircase, this cleverly designed wine nook is a testament to efficient use of space and stylish design. The nook features a custom-built bar area with a black granite countertop, perfect for hosting and wine tasting. The backdrop is an eye-catching array of elongated, teal-blue tiles, adding depth and a pop of color to the space. Built-in shelving with integrated lighting highlights a selection of glassware and wine bottles, creating a cozy yet elegant atmosphere. The area also includes a small wine refrigerator and additional storage drawers, making it both beautiful and functional.

Cheers!
Emerald and Azure Accents: This was such an incredible project with a long-time client. We LOVE the fabulous lighting, comfy sofas, and incredible custom-designed rug in our clients’ favorite shades of emerald and azure blue. What is your favorite?

The kitchen is often considered the heart of the home, a place where culinary creativity and family memories blend seamlessly. Upgrading your kitchen not only enhances its functionality but also elevates its aesthetic appeal and increases your home’s value. Here are some of the best kitchen upgrades from an interior designer’s perspective that can transform your cooking space into a stylish and efficient haven.

1. Modernize with New Countertops

Countertops are the workhorse of the kitchen, and upgrading them can make a significant impact. Quartz and granite are popular choices due to their durability and variety of colors and patterns. For a luxurious touch, consider marble countertops, although they require more maintenance. A well-chosen countertop can become a stunning focal point, adding both elegance and practicality to your kitchen.

2. Upgrade Your Cabinets

Cabinets set the tone for your kitchen’s style. If your budget allows, replacing old cabinets with custom-built ones can create a bespoke look tailored to your needs. For a more budget-friendly option, consider refacing existing cabinets. This involves replacing the cabinet doors and drawer fronts while keeping the existing cabinet boxes. Choose timeless colors like white, navy, or soft gray for a classic look, or go bold with deep greens or blues for a modern twist.

3. Install a Kitchen Island

A kitchen island provides additional workspace, storage, and seating. It’s a versatile feature that can serve as a prep area, dining spot, or a place for casual gatherings. Customize your island with built-in appliances like a sink or cooktop to maximize functionality. An island can also be a great place to incorporate unique design elements such as contrasting cabinet colors or a butcher block countertop.

4. Incorporate Smart Appliances

Smart appliances are not just a tech trend; they enhance the efficiency and convenience of your kitchen. Consider investing in smart ovens, refrigerators, and dishwashers that can be controlled via your smartphone. These appliances often come with features like energy-saving modes, advanced cooking functions, and even recipe suggestions. Not only do they make cooking easier, but they also add a modern touch to your kitchen design.

5. Enhance Lighting

Proper lighting is crucial in the kitchen for both functionality and ambiance. Layered lighting, which includes task, ambient, and accent lighting, ensures that every area of the kitchen is well-lit. Pendant lights over the island, under-cabinet lighting for workspaces, and recessed ceiling lights for general illumination can create a warm and inviting atmosphere. Choose fixtures that complement your kitchen’s style, whether it’s sleek and modern or charming and rustic.

6. Upgrade the Backsplash

A new backsplash can instantly refresh your kitchen. Subway tiles are a classic choice, but consider experimenting with patterns, colors, and materials like glass, marble, or even metal for a unique look. A well-designed backsplash not only protects your walls from splashes and spills but also adds texture and personality to your kitchen.

7. Add Open Shelving

Open shelving is a trend that adds both functionality and style to your kitchen. It allows for easy access to frequently used items and provides an opportunity to display decorative pieces, cookbooks, or stylish dishware. Mix open shelves with traditional cabinets to maintain a balance between storage and display.

8. Upgrade Flooring

Kitchen floors need to be durable and easy to clean. Hardwood floors add warmth and can seamlessly connect the kitchen with adjacent living spaces. If you prefer tiles, consider porcelain or ceramic tiles that mimic the look of natural stone or wood. For a comfortable and sustainable option, cork flooring is soft underfoot and provides excellent insulation.

9. Improve Storage Solutions

Efficient storage solutions keep your kitchen organized and clutter-free. Pull-out shelves, lazy Susans, and drawer dividers can make a big difference in how you use your space. Consider installing a pantry cabinet or utilizing vertical space with tall cabinets that reach the ceiling. Creative storage solutions help maintain a clean and functional kitchen environment.

10. Upgrade the Sink and Faucet

A stylish and functional sink can be a game-changer in your kitchen. Consider a farmhouse sink for a classic look or a sleek undermount sink for a modern aesthetic. Pair it with a high-quality faucet that offers features like a pull-down sprayer or touchless operation. Upgrading your sink and faucet not only improves your kitchen’s functionality but also adds a touch of luxury.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading your kitchen is a rewarding investment that enhances your home’s value and your daily living experience. By focusing on key areas such as countertops, cabinets, lighting, and appliances, you can create a kitchen that is both beautiful and practical. Whether you’re aiming for a full renovation or small updates, these interior designer-approved upgrades will help you achieve a kitchen that reflects your style and meets your needs.

Use mirrors to create the illusion of more space. Strategically placing mirrors, especially across from windows, can make a room appear larger and brighter by reflecting natural light and enhancing the depth of the space. This simple trick can significantly improve the ambiance of a room without major renovations.
Our experience with Robin was wonderful! She spent time with us to determine our style and was able to integrate design, colors, and patterns that reflected that perfectly…Robin is a great listener and I found she made note of little things I mentioned that made our design quite personal. She shopped for very specific antiques and accent pieces which finished the look. We were so happy with this initial project, that we invited Robin back to renovate our master bath and guest bath. A bonus is that she works with a great team of talented craftsmen who are kind and courteous.
